GETTING WOMEN, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN ACTIVE

National Epidemic: Overweight Children:

In the United States, 1 out of every 5 children suffers from being overweight.  This could eventually lead to obesity and risks factors associated with heart disease.  A simple way to combat this epidemic is by increasing physical activity and following proper nutrition guidelines.

BENEFITS:

  • Decreased risk of heart disease

  • Decreased blood pressure

  • Decreased cholesterol

  • Weight loss

  • Children who are physically active are better behaved and sleep better at night

CHANGE BEHAVIORS EARLY IN LIFE:

Encourage your child to eat healthy, and participate in physical activity early in life.  It is easier to change unhealthy habits at a younger age.

Activities You Can Do With Your Child:

Infants: crawling on floor, pulling self up, standing, scooting, hitting a balloon, griping a ball, clapping, playing.

Children: walking, running, jumping, climbing, swimming, marching, skipping, dancing, biking, tumbling, rollerblading. tag, catch, hide and go seek, jump rope, hopscotch, four square, play with dog, or whatever you can think up!!!

Parents: lift your children, take the stairs instead of elevators, walk to the store, ride a bike to work, PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS!!!

REMINDER:

It is important for YOU and your CHILD to participate in 20-60 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.  Be a role model to your kids.  Set an example of being physically fit and eating a healthy diet.  Remember to feed you and your child according to the Food Guide Pyramid and to drink plenty of water along the way.
