Facts about Teen Pregnancy  

National Facts

  • The United States has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the western industrialized world. The teen pregnancy rate for teens aged 15 through 19 had a steady downturn from 1991 until 2005, but then rose by 3% between 2005 to 2006. It rose again by 1% in 2007.
  • Teen pregnancy costs the United States at least $7 billion annually.
  • About 2/3 of all United States teenagers who have a baby will not graduate from high school.
  • About 25% of teenagers who give birth have another baby within 2 years.
  • Children of teen parents are 50% more likely to repeat a grade and are less likely to graduate from high school.

 

State of Florida and Collier County Facts

 

  • In 2007 the percentages of births to teens 18 and under was 6.6% both in Florida and Collier County. Data indicates that for 2008 the percentages will be 6.3% for Florida and 6.4 for Collier County.
  • In 2007 the percentages of mothers aged 15 to 19 giving birth who had one or more previous births was 18.4% for Florida and 21.2% for Collier County.
  • In 2007 the percentages of births to mothers with less than a high school diploma was 20.8% for Florida and 35.4% for Collier County.
