Teen Pregnancy Program

Teen Choices and Teen Choices Auxiliary

Mission

To reduce the incidence of teen pregnancy in Collier County through a collaborative, comprehensive, out-come focused approach to prevention activities that are sensitive to the diverse beliefs, values, and needs of the community.

Goals

  • To reduce the number of repeat births in teens

  • To provide support and services to parenting teens until they have achieved completion of high school or a vocational program and have a career plan that will provide them with self-sufficiency

  • To provide parenting skills to parenting teens that will result in a better future for the children

Services

The Teen Choices Program of the Collier County Health Department offers supportive care coordination provided through home based visits and phone contacts. The frequency of visits and calls is based on intensity of services needed. This service is available to any pregnant or parenting teen in Collier County.

The teen is provided a care coordinator who works one on one with the teen throughout her pregnancy and early parenting. Provided in the program is an individualized support plan with education on prenatal care, pregnancy, childbirth, parenting skills, and daily living skills. Referral and connection to community partners and resources is also provided. Strong emphasis is on the teen remaining in school through high school completion, developing a career goal, and avoidance of another pregnancy in the teen years.

The Teen Choices Auxiliary is an extension of the Teen Choices Program that allows support and mentoring to the teen mother and child until the goal of high school graduation or vocational program completion are met.  It provides the teen mother with a sense of accomplishment in moving on to a more independent and self reliant stage while still providing a safety net as they work on their goals, and also assures that good parenting techniques continue.
