HIV/AIDS
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease caused by a virus (HIV) that impairs the body's resistance to infection and can lead to death. The AIDS virus is passed in semen, blood, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. In order to get infected, the virus has to come into direct contact with you through one of these body fluids.
You don't get AIDS from everyday contact with people. You cannot get infected with the AIDS virus from:
-
Toilet seats or water fountains
-
Touching or hugging, or sharing make up
-
Swimming pools, showers, or bathrooms
-
Being around someone who has AIDS
You can get AIDS if:
-
You have sex with someone who is carrying the AIDS virus
-
You exchange semen, blood or vaginal secretions during sex. The virus can be passed during vaginal, anal and possibly oral sex. Deep kissing should be avoided if there are sores or bleeding gums.
You can protect yourself by:
-
Abstaining from sexual intercourse. Remember there are ways to express intimacy without taking risks.
-
Practicing "safe" sex. Condoms are the only form of contraception that help prevent AIDS.
-
No IV drug use.
-
Do not use alcohol or drugs, which could impair your ability to make decisions.
The only way to know for sure is to be tested. Anonymous and confidential testing is done at Collier County Health Department 239-252-8207 and Planned Parenthood 239-262-8923 |
