COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE 

The Collier County School Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) is “an advisory group composed primarily of school, health, and community representatives who act collectively to advise the school district on aspects of child health as defined by the Coordinated School Health (CSH) Model.” – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 

FUNCTIONS OF SHAC: 

Annually review and approve the School Health Plan

Advise the school district of current initiatives and resources

Program planning

Parent and community involvement

Advocacy

Recruitment of community health resources

Evaluation, accountability and quality control 

GOALS OF SHAC: 

  1. Explore the feasibility of developing a pilot risk reduction program addressing childhood obesity in Collier County.
  2. Make health information and wellness resources available to parents and teachers.
  3. Provide resources for exercise and nutrition education to new CCPS health and PE coordinators.
  4. Produce and distribute an employee health newsletter (generated by the Human Resources and Employee Health departments of the Collier County Public Schools with support from SHAC).
  5. Explore the feasibility of an employee wellness program, in conjunction with the efforts of the Collier County Public Schools Human Resources and Employee Health departments.

Membership may include representatives from the eight components of Coordinated School Health: 

Health Education

Healthy School Nutrition

Physical Education

School Health Services

Guidance and Counseling

Healthy School Environment

Staff Wellness

Family and Community Involvement 

Broad representation of school and community including business, medical professionals, civic leaders, policy and lawmakers, parents and students

Professional abilities

Interest in youth

Awareness of community

Willingness to devote time

Representative of population

Credibility of appointees
