Health Education

 

Overview:

 

Underlying Causes of Death in the U.S.?  in Florida?:

  • 400,000 deaths / year due to tobacco use

  • 300,000 deaths /year due to poor diet and  inactivity

  • 100,000 deaths / year due to alcohol abuse

  • Our lifestyle choices contribute to our risk of morbidity and mortality!

Nutrition and Health Education promotes health in the community through fostering good nutrition and health habits.

 

Nutrition & Health Education Program Areas:

  • WIC – The Woman, Infants, and Children Supplemental Food Program

  • Tobacco Prevention

  • Chronic Disease Community Intervention Program (CIP)

  • General Nutrition & Health Education

WIC Program provides:

  • Nutrition assessment & counseling for pregnant, breastfeeding, & postpartum Women, Infants, and Children up to age five.

  • Food vouchers for specific nutritious foods

  • Breastfeeding education and support

  • Coordination / co-location with free Immunization Services

  • Eligibility based on income & nutrition risk

Tobacco Prevention - SWAT:

  • Community-based intervention to decrease the acceptance, initiation, and use of tobacco products among youth.

  • Emphasis on youth empowerment and leadership

  • Community partnering to expand the effectiveness of the anti-tobacco message

  • Integrated with Safe and Drug Free Schools

Community Intervention Program (CIP):

  • Generation Excellence Immokalee Health Campaign

  • Target population is Immokalee schools and community

  • Goal is to decrease heart disease, hypertension and diabetes.

  • Strategy is to increase physical activity, improve diet, and avoid tobacco.

Nutrition and Health Education provides the nutrition education component for the CIP project.
