Health Education
Services:
Nutrition and Health Education Division Health Education's role is to provide leadership, direction and programs necessitated by the themes and issues facing Collier County. It is estimated that up to 50% of premature illnesses and deaths could be eliminated if people just chose positive lifestyle behaviors, i.e. cessation of smoking, moderate exercise, moderate alcohol consumption, low fat diets and protected sex. However, many Americans are not heeding our positive health messages. Today, fewer than half of adults exercise regularly, one third are overweight and one-quarter smoke. Drug use among our young is up, smoking in the eighth and tenth grades has increased by 50% in the last six years and more women are choosing to use alcohol during their pregnancy. These are just a few of the grim facts which public health and health education must confront.
