Surveillance
The purpose of the HIV/AIDS surveillance
program is to promote the ongoing, systemic collection, analysis, evaluation
and dissemination of epidemiologic data. These data are used to plan,
implement and evaluate HIV/AIDS programs and interventions. Surveillance in
Florida identifies HIV-related conditions at various points along the
spectrum of the disease; from reporting of HIV infection in otherwise
asymptomatic people, to death certificate review for HIV/AIDS-related
mortality.
In the State of Florida, the State Health
Officer designated AIDS as a reportable disease in 1983. In 1986, mandatory
reporting of AIDS was incorporated into the Florida Statutes (s.384, F.S.),
and the Florida Administrative Code (64D, F.A.C.) directed that all AIDS
cases be reported to the local county health department by physicians who
diagnose or treat AIDS. Effective July 1, 1997, cases of HIV infection
(regardless of an AIDS diagnosis) also became reportable in Florida.
